In a bid to enhance co-ordination and collaboration for disaster risk management in Western Division, Government agencies and civil society organisations (CSOs) met at the Tanoa Skylodge Hotel, Nadi last Thursday.
The two-day event is co-ordinated by the Australian government‘s Fiji Community Development Programme (FCDP) with the objective to provide an opportunity for CSOs and Government agencies to plan a collaborative approach to disaster risk management.
Team leader Michael Brownjohn said, “Through this workshop we hope to enhance the understanding of the roles and responsibilities of the CSOs and Government agencies in DRM and collaborate more closely for effective co-ordination.”
He said the focus would be on training for preparation before and the response after natural disasters.
“The programme will foster discussion and planning to strengthen co-ordination between donors, Government and CSOs as the 2015/2016 cyclone season looms,” he said.
“The Fiji Meteorological Centre predicts that two to three tropical cyclones will affect Fiji this season. Some parts of Fiji also remain exposed to prolonged dry spells that will affect water supply for several more months.”
Mr Brownjohn said the combined efforts of government agencies, CSOs and international partners will provide the platform for proper preparedness and rapid recovery should a cyclone or severe drought occur.
TISI Mathaar Sangam National President Walliama Swami said such collaboration was very important for the CSOs.
“We are all affected when disaster strikes, especially communities such as in Nadi where floods and cyclones strike,” she said.
