Dry Spell Affects Sugar Production At Rarawai
Fiji Sugar Corporation will be making more investments to take the industry to greater heights.

The Rarawai Sugar Mill in Ba terminated operations the past Thursday having processed 492,000 tonnes of cane.

Fiji Sugar Cane Growers Council chief executive Sundresh Chetty said there was a slight decrease in tonnes of sugar processed when compared to the past season.

He said the reason for this was the prolonged dry season in all areas in the West.

“We are however happy with the farmers efforts and we encourage them to continue with the hardworking attitude for better tonnes of sugar in the coming years,” he said.

Lautoka Mill

Meanwhile, Mr Chetty said they have yet to finalise the date FSC Lautoka Mill will terminate operations for this processing season.

“The Sugar Industry Tribunal office is yet to confirm the date for the mill to cease crushing,” he said.

He said Lautoka has 45,000 tonnes of cane that is yet to be harvested.

“There is a lot more of cane to be harvested from the Lautoka and Sigatoka side, so there isn’t any fixed date for the mill to cease processing,” he said.

“I am urging all growers to put in more effort to harvesting their canes and transporting them to the mil as soon as possible for a maximum benefit.”

A short break

Meanwhile FSC had a Diwali Shut Down yesterday because of the Diwali Public Holiday and resumed normal crushing this morning.

The day is usually used to do some minor cleaning up in the mill.
