The Vodafone Fijian 7s teams played to expectation in the first day of the Nukubati Resort Macuata Provincial Youth Sevens tournament at Subrail Park in Labasa yesterday.

Team manager Ropate Kauvesi said their focus was to give players game time and proved their worth to Vodafone Fijian 7s head coach Ben Ryan.

“Ryan would make his decision and announce the names of 16 players to play in Dubai and Cape Town next month after the tournament,” Kauvesi said.

“The players are aware of this and they are all performing their best to be selected.

“We are glad all the players had the opportunity in this tournament to play.

“Each team had the chance to play three pool games and they have won all games.”

Fiji Team One won against Red Diamond 49-0, 31-12 against Can Do Generation and Macuata Provincial 48-0.

Fiji Team Two beat Bainivualiku 38-0, Nuclear Seven 40-0 and Ravuka 68-0.

Meanwhile, Ryan has requested tournament organisers to try to complete the tournament before 2.30pm.

The tournament was scheduled to finish at 6pm.

Ryan said he wants to name 16 players before he leaves with Kauvesi in the last flight to Suva so that they can fly out tomorrow to join the Telecom Fijiana  in the  Oceania 7s Olympic Qualifier in Auckland this weekend.

“If the tournament continues until the afternoon then we have to delay the announcement,” Ryan said

Macuata Provincial Youth Sports President and coordinator of the Nukubati Resort Macuata Provincial Youth Sevens tournament Peni Rakanace said he was happy to have the two national teams.

“Their participation added spark to the competition,”Rakanace said.

“We have managed to complete all the pool games on time as requested by Ben Ryan.”
