SUGAR: Ministry Budget Up By $12m, Big Effort To Help Harvest, Transport

Continuing with its commitment to reform the sugar industry, Government has increased the budget for the Ministry of Sugar by $12 million to $23.8 million in 2016.

This was announced by the Minister for Finance, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, during the 2016 National Budget.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said the Ministry of Sugar was seeking to collaborate with international organisations to fund capital projects to improve harvesting and transportation for cane growers.

Development Programme

$5 million has been the continued allocation for the Sugar Development Programme which has two elements.

First is the Cane Development Grants, which targets farmers who have fallow land and new growers who lack start-up capital.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said the Ministry projects that 2.060 hectares will be planted under this programme.

The second is the Cash-Back Incentive scheme incentivises growers with the resources to plant which new cane at a total of $400 an acre.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said this scheme can generate an additional 3000 acres under cultivation.

Digitisation

Meanwhile the Ministry of Sugar is currently working on the digitisation of sugarcane sectors using satellite Global Positioning System (GPS).

The digitisation of the sugarcane sectors will enable Government to capture and store information such as precise parameters of sugarcane farms, unplanted land, soil type, climatic data, distance to mills and road conditions.

This will enable real time decision making regarding the sugarcane industry by providing much more accurate crop and production statistics.

For 2016, Government has provided an allocation of $0.6 million towards this project.
