Sarote Konrote says she’s overwhelmed with her husband’s appointment to the highest office in the land.

“It’s a great way to end his career, but I know it’s an important post and with God’s help everything will be okay for the both of us,” she said.

“Becoming the First Lady is a surprise because I never once thought about it.”

The saying, ‘Behind every successful man is a woman’, speaks volumes of Fiji’s new First Lady, Mrs Konrote, the wife of Fiji’s new President, Jioji Konrote.

Mrs Konrote, who once worked as a bank officer with the ANZ Bank, quit her job in 1981 to fulfill her role as a wife and mother to their two sons, Emmanuel and Andrew.

She said she had never regretted that decision.

“When we got married, I was working and then he started to go to Lebanon and then we had our first child.

“They promoted me in the bank and we talked it over and thought that it was best for me to stay at home,” the First Lady said.

Mr Konrote, succeeded Ratu Epeli Nailatikau after the latter had completed two terms as President.

Ratu Epeli was accorded a full military and traditional farewell by the State on Wednesday.
