Better road means people no longer have to walk 1.5 kilometres

More than 300 residents of Valebasoga Settlement outside Labasa Town for the first time have access to bus services in their area.

This was after Northern Buses extended its services to the settlement yesterday.

Rural Advisory Board councillor Nazirud Dean said residents previously had to walk 1.5 kilometres to catch a bus because the bad road conditions didn’t allow buses to fully operate in the area.

“The people are happy that for the first time they now have access to bus services operating three times a day; one at 9am, the other at 1pm and the last one runs at 5.30 pm,” Mr Dean said.

“I had liaised with the Northern Buses for their bus services on our newly -constructed road and they had readily agreed,” he said.

Mr Dean said he was also thankful to the Commissioner Northern’s Office for working with Fiji Roads Authority to make the road more accessible to bus operators.

“I am thankful to Government for taking notice of our need for improvement of rural road infrastructure. We have school children, farmers and market vendors who have to wake up at 5am in the morning with their baggage and produce and walk 1.5km to the nearest bus stand; it would be if it was raining.

“The people are very happy for this development,” he said.

Meanwhile, Babu Lal, 70, a long-time resident of the settlement, said it was the happiest day of his life witnessing the road development and the bus transportation in their settlement.

“I am also thankful to the advisory councillor Mr Dean for actively carrying out the voice of the people that previous advisories could do,” Mr Lal said.

He said school children would now travel with ease come 2016.
