Three people yesterday became the latest road fatalities. Another is in the Sigatoka District Hospital after they were involved in an accident at Ciriwai, Lomawai.

Police said they were rushing to the Nadi International Airport for the driver, Mohammed Zuber, 29, to catch an afternoon flight to Australia to attend a funeral in Brisbane.

The family is from Kasavu near Nausori Town. Dead are Mr Zuber, his father-in-law Abdul Ali, a Police officer, and his mother-in-law Rehanna Ali.

Admitted in hospital is Mr Zuber’s wife, Rakeeba Rizwana.

The accident happened near Ciriwai farmer Ken Naidu’s home.

“The driver was still breathing when I got him out of the vehicle. I did everything I could to help. I pulled the mother out first and then the rest. I couldn’t pull the driver out because he was stuck.”

He said he used his tractor to pull part of the car to free Mr Zuber because he was still alive. “We managed to pull him out. He died few minutes when we got him out.”

He said the family was rushing to the airport for an afternoon flight to Brisbane to attend Mr Zuber’s  grandfather’s funeral. Police confirmed this.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said the incident happened about 4.30pm.

She said the car driven by Mr Zuber carried three other passengers. It collided with a van driven by a 26-year-old from Rakiraki.

“The victim’s vehicle was travelling towards Nadi Airport from Sigatoka when it allegedly failed to negotiate a bend and drove to the opposite lane resulting in the accident,” she said.

Ms Naisoro said Mrs Rehanna Ali died at the Sigatoka Hostpial. Her husband died a few hours later.
