The Ministry for Foreign Affairs has announced the appointment of Filimone Waqabaca as High Commissioner to New Zealand.

Mr Waqabaca, currently Permanent Secretary for Finance, is expected to take up his appointment next month.

Mr Waqabaca has extensive experience in the financial sector with a background of service at the Reserve Bank of Fiji and local statutory organisations, Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat and International Monetary Fund. He is a graduate of the University of the South Pacific and the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom. He is also a former chairman of the Fiji Rugby Union.

Mr Waqabaca said he was looking forward to serving in his new posting and was confident he would be able to fulfil the expectations placed on him by the Government.

Minister for Foreign Affairs Ratu Inoke Kubuabola said Mr Waqabaca’s professional experience and understanding of regional and international dynamics would be invaluable to boosting relations with New Zealand.

Ratu Inoke said the combination of financial acumen and senior management experience in Mr Waqabaca’s professional background was ideal for his new posting.
