$1m Damage To Pine From Fire

Executive Chairman of Fiji Pine Ltd Faiz Khan has called for a complete ban on all fires including in sugarcane fields.

Mr Khan said they recently lost 160 hectares of a two-year-old plantation in their Nadi forest because of a fire. An estimated $1 million in value has been lost.

“We suspect the fire spread from a nearby cane field where a farmer was burning sugar cane. A complaint has been lodged with Nadi Police Station that is investigating,” he said.

“Last year we had a ban on farmers burning sugar cane or lighting any fires. The drought is more severe this year but we don’t have a similar ban.

“While we are educating the farmers near to our plantations to not to burn in high risk situations, it is too difficult to control the minds of some irresponsible people.

“The better solution is for there to be a complete ban on all fires,” he said.

Mr Khan explained that when the plantation is so young, chances of it surviving after a fire are at a minimum. But a two-year-old has absolutely zero.

Mr Khan said the drought has been a significant concern on pine and people pray for rain because it is a significant concern for the moment.”
