The recruitment of additional doctors and nurses next year is expected to take medical services delivery to another level, Minister for Health Jone Usamte said.
Government has allocated $280 million to the Ministry of Health. This is an increase of $11 million in the 2015 National Budget.
The Colonial War Memorial Hospital was allocated an increase of $2.6 million mainly to hire an additional 36 doctors and 20 nurses in 2016, adding to the 1446 existing staff at the hospital.
Mr Usamate said: “Now our main focus is to make sure that we use the budget accordingly.
“We already have a strategic plan for this and now we are developing our corporate plan for the year and see that the money given to us is used for the medical advantage of every Fijian,” he said.

Commitment
The Attorney-General, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, while delivering the 2016 National Budget said: “Fiji desperately needs more qualified doctors and nurses and we have budgeted an increase of nearly $9 million to recruit an additional 150 doctors and 200 nurses.”
Mr Usamate improving medical services in rural areas was one of their major areas of concern.
“They have been allocated money from the national budget for the maintenance of nursing stations and other major works that needs to be done,” he said.
