The vice-president of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Christine Beerli, is in Fiji for a three-day visit.
Yesterday the Biel, Switzerland national, became the first dignitary to be received by new President, Jioji Konrote at Government House.
This is Ms Beerli’s first visit to the region to hold bilateral talks with Government officials and visit the Fiji Red Cross Society’s field projects.
“It was a pleasure to be the first official visitor to the President and to be hosted in the Government House where we had a very enjoyable encounter and open discussions with the work we do in the region and Fiji,” Ms Beerli said.
During the meeting President Konrote assured his continuous support towards the work of ICRC.
“He was happy with the work we are doing in the region and also wishes that this collaboration continues in the way it has been for the past years.
“I have known President Konrote for the past years when he was serving as a peacekeeper in Lebanon and in 1995, he hosted us for a dinner when he was with United Nations.”
Yesterday she also visited the Republic of the Fiji Military Forces acting Commander, Rear Admiral Viliame Naupoto, visited the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, Corrections Commissioner Lieutenant-Colonel Ifereimi Vasu and Speaker of the House, Dr Jiko Luveni.
“I have received a positive feedback from Government officials regarding the work we are doing in the region and Fiji.
“We are really happy with the impression, very supportive regarding our work as very valuable.
“ICRC here in Fiji is covering fourteen countries including New Zealand and Australia.
“We put our hub specifically in Fiji because we know that Fiji is the centre of the Pacific and it’s a good location to also cover the rest of the region, an operational mission in Papua New Guinea which is also covered from Fiji,” she said.
