The people of Mali Island in Macuata celebrated Mali Day with family and friends at the Labasa Court grounds yesterday.

The celebration also raised funds for development projects and education assistance to the island of Mali.

District representative Seru Moce said money raised from last year’s fund drive was invested on the island’s electrification project. This year’s fund drive will target other developing projects and education assistance for the people of Mali.

“We raised $14,000 last year which helped to fund our $30,000 electrification project that we have submitted already to relevant authorities while we wait for Fiji Electricity Authority (FEA) to survey and install electricity in the island,” Mr Moce said.

“The project intends to provide electricity to the three villages in Mali Island; Nakawaga, Vesi and Ligaulevu, including Ligaulevu Primary School and Vorovoro Island.”

He said they did not have a fundraising target this year because only the men of Mali Island in Fiji and abroad contributed to the soli and the women served food at the fundraising.

They were able to raise $5000 by midday yesterday with more funds expected to be raised at the close of the celebration.
