What was to be a trip to enable their brother-in-law to attend a funeral in Australia has left the Ali siblings orphans.
Zameel Ali, 23, and his youngest brother Muzzamil Ali lost their mother Rehanna Ali, 40, and father ,Fiji Police Force CID officer Corporal Abdul Ali, 49, to an accident at Ciriwai, Lomawai on Thursday.
They were laid to rest at the Nasinu Muslim Cemetery in Nakasi yesterday.
Their brother-in-law, Mohammed Zuber, 28, also died in the accident and was also buried at Kasavu in Nausori yesterday.
Muzzamil, a Year 13 student at Nasinu Muslim Primary School, could not hide his emotions when his parents were finally laid to rest yesterday.
“I was supposed to go in the same vehicle as them but my brother-in-law said for me to go in another vehicle,” he said.
“When the accident happened I couldn’t believe it. I’m still shocked right now.”
He has just sat for his Fiji Eighth Year Examination and said his plans for his parents have now come to naught.
“I have been studying hard so I can get good marks just to make them happy but now it’s no more.”
His older brother, Zameel, said they would miss their parents especially their humble and loving ways towards them.
“I now have big shoes to fill especially in fulfilling the role of a mother and a father to my sister and brother,” he said.
Their sister, Rakeeba Rizwana (Mohammed’s wife), 20, is currently recovering at home.
The four were on their way to drop off Mr Zuber at the Nadi International Airport when they were involved in the accident.
Mr Ali was based at the Fiji Police Force’s CID headquarters in Toorak when he died.
Senior Police officers led by its Acting Police Commissioner, Brigadier-General Sitiveni Qiliho, attended the funeral yesterday to pay their final respects.
The last post and three-gun salute were accorded during the funeral.
