Strong Families Foundation For Strong Nation: Koroivueta

Nurturing strong families is the key to building a strong nation.

This was highlighted by the Ministry of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Permanent Secretary, Josefa Koroivueta, at the Sawani Family Fun Day.

The event had been put together by the Sawani Crime Prevention Committee and the Ministry of Women to raise awareness on child protection and families. He reiterated on the importance of positive parenting and ways to build a prosperous family.

“We need to nurture our families so that our children can have a brighter future that truly belongs to them. To the parents, we should be happy that this government has looked after the welfare of the families, particularly through the assistance provided in the education sector,” he said.

“The Ministry has also commissioned a National Child Helpline, “1325” that basically allows children to report cases and seek counselling and advice. We tell the children that as long as you are near a phone you can get help by dialing the number 1325, they can report a case of violence and get the help that they need. Parents are also encouraged to use the Helpline to seek information on positive parenting or any issues concerning their family welfare.”

Dr Koroivueta reaffirmed the ministry’s continued support to raise awareness on family development in Fiji.

Speaking on behalf of the Sawani Crime Prevention Committee, Mr Anare Masitabua said plans were in place to increase such awareness programmes in other parts of Fiji.  DEPTFO News
