Fijians exports have grown by more than 30 per cent from $1.6 billion in 2010 to $2.3 billion in 2014.

Permanent Secretary for Industry, Trade and Tourism, Shaheen Ali, looking at the overall export trends said, programmes, such as, National Export Strategy are contributors to this increase.

“The NES recipients/exporters contributed $30.9 million to our national exports, through the support provided by our programme. We want this contribution to increase. And I am sure it will,” he said.

The NES is essentially a boost to an exporter’s ability to increase their current export capacity or venture into new markets.

“Through the NES initiative, we also encouraging exporters to move to exports of value added products,” Mr Ali said.

“Fiji has been for a very long time been a supplier of raw material, but we need to change that.

“As Fiji enhances its position as the regional hub and our growing manufacturing base, our exporters need to look at value added products. For example, instead of exporting sawn timber, make timber products.”

Amendments

Mr Ali highlighted that since 2013, specific amendments were made to the application criteria to open the application to small and medium enterprises under the NES grants.

“This process was to allow for SMEs to utilise the NES support in order to broaden their horizon and expand into new markets,” he said.

“It has been very encouraging to note that since then, the number of SME applicants and successful recipients has increased.”

The strategy in total covers 13 sectors, however, the Fijian Government in 2007 further refined the strategy to focus on six priority sectors, namely Agro Business, Forestry, Fisheries, Mineral Water, Audio Visual and ICT.
