The Minister for Youth and Sports Laisenia Tuitubou has congratulated the Telecom Fijiana 7s team for qualifying for the 2016 Rio Olympics in Brazil.

Telecom Fijiana booked their place after thrashing Samoa 55-0 in the final of the Oceania 7s Olympic Qualifier in Auckland, New Zealand, yesterday.

Tuitubou said the influence of Telecom Fijiana coach Chris Cracknell and Vodafone Fijian 7s head coach Ben Ryan was a huge bonus for the sport.

“We congratulate the team for making Fiji proud,” Tuitubou said.

“They not only qualify but do it in great way being unbeaten throughout the tournament.

“I’ve watched all their games and I have seen the impact of the training programme that has been implanted by Ben and Chris, the improvement is massive and reflected in the girl’s performance.

“They did not let any team scored against them which speaks volumes of their defensive structure. They are definitely heading the right track and I’m very happy.

“I just want to thank them for an outstanding performance, a job well done.”

Tuitubou said how Cracknell has fine-tuned the girls with the help of Ryan, shows that overseas coaches are needed.

“Chris’ influence was evident with the boys and now with the girls. And that tells us that having overseas coaches would be an extra advantage to us,” he said.

“The game of rugby has changed and we need overseas coaches to help bring our team to be on par or better than the rest of the world.

“We do have some locally trained coaches as well but having that overseas element adds something extra.

“I think these girls have proved that playing sevens rugby is not just a male port anymore, our girls are just as capable as competing at top level tournaments.”

The Telecom Fijiana team have gone throughout the Oceania 7s tournament unbeaten
