Taichi Vakasama knows more good things will come after he received the Male Swimmer of the Year award from the Minister for Youth and Sports Laisenia Tuitubou last Saturday.

The Swami Vivekananda College Year 10 student dedicated the award to his parents.

“I was surprised to win the award but was hoping something good like this will happen to me,” he said.

His dad comes from Daliconi, Vanuabalavu, Lau while his mother is from Tokyo, Japan.

“My parents are the ones that support me for my morning and evening training. They provided for and motivated me to do my best.”

He hopes to be an Olympian representing Fiji in future.

“I love this sport since I was part of it while at Mount St Mary Primary School. I want to represent Fiji in future Olympics, things are not easy but I love the challenges.”

He also won the Junior Male Swimmer award and Breastroke of the Year award.

The 16-year-old is a member of the Nadi  Barracudas’ Swimming Club that was also crowned the Club of the Year.  Club member Cheyenne Rova also won the Female Swimmer of the Year award.
