Minister for Education, Heritage and Arts Mahendra Reddy said the quality of students being streamed into the secondary school system must be reevaluated.
He stressed this point while officiating as chief guest at the opening of the teachers’ quarters and awards night at Veisaru Sanatan Dharam School last Saturday.
“A student who can’t write and read English in the primary school system will not be able to improve in the secondary school system because the foundation is weak,” he said.
“This is what we see here that 34 per cent of the students in the primary school system throughout Fiji have passed while 66 per cent have failed English and that’s why we have started reforms of education.”
He said the pass rate of students needed to be analysed and improved.
“Output matters, if we can’t deliver the output then no matter how much time you spend in the classroom in school, it doesn’t matter what matters is output,” he said.
Mr Reddy said teachers’ performance would also be taken into consideration.
“I look forward to having a talanoa session on behalf of the Government and members of Parliament. We will revamp the education system in the country to ensure the children get the best quality education,” he said.
