Fight for your spot, coach Cracknell tells players

The Telecom Fijiana 7s players will need to fight for their spots in the team, says Chris Cracknell.

The Englishman made the comment in Nadi yesterday after team qualified for the 2016 Rio Olympics for winning the Oceania 7s Olympic Qualifier in Auckland on Sunday.

Coach Cracknell will make some chop and changes in the team for the Dubai 7s next month.

“The world knows now where we are on the sevens stage and we have to make sure that we are on our guard,” he said.

“There will be some changes for Dubai with only eight players retained from the current team and the rest will be selected from our 24-member member squad.

“This is a new Fijiana outfit and we need to make sure we build a strong squad to set the world alight.

“We have to develop, educate them in the right manner not only as rugby players but as Olympic athletes.”

Two players Asinate Savu (arm injury) and Litia Naiqato (ankle injury) will be sidelined for the next assignment.

“They are injured and they need to fight for their spots,”Cracknell said.

“The girls know they need to work hard to make them better rugby players representing Fiji.”

He added with only four stops in the World Rugby Women Sevens Series this year, he has a plan in place.

“I need to freshen up the squad for Dubai but I need experienced players not as first cap.

“We need the experience players just like the Ben Ryan-coached Vodafone Flying Fijians 7s team.

“We have to make sure the girls work hard and make sure they earn the spot. We cannot afford to look back but forward. We have set the standard and the onus is the 12 players to earn a spot in the team.

The Women Sevens Series in Dubai is on December 3-4.
