Parliament had a lively session in the 2016 Budget debate yesterday.

The Opposition’s response was delivered by Shadow Minister of Finance, Biman Prasad.

He acknowledged the Minister of Finance, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum for the budget address and also thanked the work of people and civil servants who contributed towards its formulation.

In his statement, Mr Prasad also labelled the Budget as a ‘deceptive budget of a confused Government’.

“It is all over the place or a political merry-go-round where VAT is reduced for the rich, but the poorest people will pay more VAT,” he said.

There were strong responses to this from the Government side.

Minister for Industry, Trade and Tourism, Faiyaz Siddiq Koya said: “The budget would further enhance the ability of the Fijian Government to provide targeted support to the under privileged in society to broaden their horizon and their ability to earn a better living and contribute to the success of the nation.”

Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ratu Inoke Kuboubola said: “This is the people’s budget- a budget for every Fijian and it underlines the FijiFirst Government’s commitment to improving the living standards of every citizen.”

Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, Rosy Akbar said “I am very proud to be part of a government that genuinely cares – whether it is through our targeted programs or the overall reduction in the cost of living we have achieved by cutting VAT and the Ministry applauds the significant reduction in VAT in the 2016 Budget.

Assistant Minister for Health and Medical Services, Veena Bhatnagar said: “The 2016 Budget has also provided for the very important aspects relating to education, welfare and health.”
