The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has commended the Fijian Government for its continued commitment to child welfare and development. This has been highlighted through the strengthened partnership between UNICEF and the Ministry of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation to raise awareness on the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect Campaign (PCAN).
UNICEF chief of Child Protections, Amanda Bissex, describes the recent launching of PCAN campaign as a reflection of the urgency given to child protection awareness in Fiji.
“We can see the commitment by the Government of Fiji in ensuring that children are given the best education opportunities. Through this year’s PCAN launching in November, we can also see that the Government has also strengthened platforms for increased partnership.
“UNICEF will continue to support the child awareness programmes, in reaching out to the families and communities, to understand about children protection. It’s great to have a champion like Minister Akbar to openly speak about the child welfare issues in public forums,” Ms Bissex said.
UNICEF has also applauded the Fijian Government for establishing a National Child Helpline.
“We also provide support to the Ministry of Children in the areas of developing protocols, guidelines and referral network. It’s also great to see that children are able to reach out and seek advice, information through the National Child Helpline.
Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, Rosy Akbar said that children’s welfare is a top priority for the Fijian Government.
“Fiji is joining the PCAN campaign organised worldwide that aims to prevent the abuse and neglect of children. The Ministry does not tolerate any forms of abuse and neglect of children.
“Through the Ministry of Children, there are specific laws like the Child Welfare Decree that governs child protection. We are also committed to raising standards generally in the education sector,” Minister Akbar said.
