Fiji Pine Group executive chairman, Faiz Khan, said Fiji’s woodchips export has been delayed by two ship loads.

As a result, there are about three woodchip vessels worth of stock at their Lautoka and Wairiki yards.

“We had two shipments initially planned for Japan and China in the month of October which did not come and was delayed,” he said.

Mr Khan confirmed there is a shipment scheduled for early December to Japan and another scheduled for late December or January to China.

“Overall in terms of export, I think we are looking at eight vessel load this year,” he said.

He added in terms of export, other manufactures are able to export basically what they produce.

“But we are not able to guarantee to export whatever we produce,” he said.

“Our export market depends on the demand that is there in Japan and China and that demand fluctuates year in and year out.

“That can vary by up to 80 per cent in terms of demand and that has happened to us in the past.”

Some hurdles

Mr Khan noted there are a few bumps at the moment with the Chinese demand and a few bumps generally in terms of their ability to export.

“However, we are working with our importers to make sure that we mitigate those risks as best as possible,” he said.

“In China’s case, we have reduced that risk to some extent  but they are going through a down turn period.

“It has affected basically all of the commodities that China used to import be it steel or woodchips.”
