11 Years For Rapist

A 33-year-old man, who was convicted for a count of rape, was sentenced to 11 years by the High Court in Lautoka yesterday.
The accused on December 12, 2013, in Lautoka, had sexual intercourse with the victim without her consent.
The accused is the grandson of the victim’s adopted parents and was 30 years of age while the victim was a 13-year-old when the incident happened.
On the day of the incident, the accused followed the victim into a room and offered her $10 if she agreed to do ‘bad things’ with him, which the victim refused.
The accused then pushed her on the bed, covered her mouth with his hand, removed her undergarments and raped her.
Justice Thushara Rajasinghe said rape was the worst form of sexual assault which infringes on the person’s dignity, pride and confident.
“The domestic family environment is being widely considered a safe and protected place for children, however you’ve turned that into one of disgrace,” judge Rajasinghe said.
The judge added: “You abused your age and position of trust in the house to exploit the vulnerability and naivety of the victim when she was at home with you.”
The mitigating factors were that the accused was married, had five children and was the sole breadwinner.
The accused was sentenced to 11 years imprisonment with a non-parole period of nine years.
