Alleged Principal offender and mother of victim to be charged and will appear tomorrow

A woman who allegedly murdered a 14-year-old girl in Kulukulu, Sigatoka, last week appeared at the Nadi Magistrates Court yesterday afternoon.

Geeta Devi, the sister-in-law of the victim, appeared before Magistrate Siromi Turaga on a count of murder and a count of providing false information to a Police officer.

It is alleged that the accused, with another person on November 1, murdered her sister-in-law Sanjani Lata.

The victim’s body was found in a septic tank at the back of her home in Kulukulu, Sigatoka by Police.

It is also alleged that the accused gave false information to the Police whereby she had reported that the victim was missing from home from midday on the day of the alleged murder knowing that she was giving false information to a public servant.

The charges were read out and understood by the accused. Her right to legal representation was also explained to her and she opted for Legal Aid assistance.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Mohammed Shamim informed the court that the charge of murder was an indictable offence.

He requested for the accused to be remanded in the Sigatoka Police Station until Thursday when the alleged principal offender, who is the mother of the deceased will be charged and produced in court.

He said they would be consolidating the files before making an application for the case to be transferred to the Lautoka High Court.

She will appear tomorrow with the other accused person in the case before Magistrate Turaga. The accused has been further remanded in Police custody.
