Ms Li says students in hospitality should learn the language
and culture

Learning about the Chinese language and culture can be a valuable asset for those in the hospitality industry says Huali Li.

The University of the South Pacific’s Confucius Institute lecturer said this during the graduation ceremony of 41 students from the institute at the Lautoka Campus yesterday.

“With the number of Chinese people coming to Fiji for studies and work, it’s important that Fijian people also learn a bit of the language and culture,” Ms Li said.

“Also it’s quite useful for our students from the hospitality field to to learn some basic conversation in Chinese so that they can communicate with their guests.”

Ms Li said the course usually takes one year to complete and requires a completion of 24 units in order to graduate.

“Students basically learn how to write Chinese characters and the pin yin which is how to pronounce the words,” she said.

“This is the third year since the course was introduced and students feel very excited that they can communicate in Chinese and we have students in their 30s taking the course so it’s really open to all.”

She said students were also quite interested in Chinese culture and also the relations between China and Fiji.

“Students have also realised that it is quite helpful for them to learn Chinese culture. We have put up their art work and other creations in the classroom and they have all done amazing jobs,” she said.
