The US Embassy in Fiji donated books to Holy Family Secondary School in Labasa yesterday.

The US Embassy’s regional public affairs officer, Dmitri Tarakhovsky, handed over the books to the school and encouraged students to use them well.

“During my time at your age books were very expensive to buy and read. However, now books are cheap and easily available which you should take advantage of,” he said.

He urged students to explore their capabilities and knowledge.

“You should build up on leadership skills and leadership begins from the moment you use the ability to raise questions,” Mr Tarakhovsky said.

“Do not depend on teachers to feed you with all the information. Classroom-based education is not enough, you must formulate an initiative to access information from the library and educational website about your country and the world,” he said.

He also encouraged students to browse the official embassy website which diplays types of scholarship available and the scheduled cultural exchange program.

“We have scholarships for undergraduates and graduates to study in USA which the students can apply,” he said.

Holy Family Secondary School principal Timaleti Cagi said she was thankful to the embassy for the kind donation of books and delivering information about the scholarship and cultural exchange programme.
“These books will motivate our students to read and learn more,” Mrs Cagi said.
