The Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum yesterday expressed disappointment about the level of debate made in Parliament by the Opposition.
The Opposition whip, Ratu Isoa Tikoca, said in parliament that officials at the iTaukei Affairs Board should be taken to task for using a sheep as a presentation during the farewell ceremony for the former President, Ratu Epeli Nailatikau.
“This is the level of debate that we have on the budget and unfortunately the same repeat, the entire two days have been repeating this kind of shenanigans,” Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said.
He clarified that the Tui Namosi and his people had actually done the ceremony and confirmed with them that pork was used at the ceremony.
The Turaga na Tui Namosi, Ratu Suliano Matanitobua, yesterday confirmed to the Fiji Sun that pork was used during the traditional farewell ceremony.
He said the pork used at the ceremony was bought from the Fiji Corrections Service.
The Attorney-General said since religion was bravely flaunted by the other side, they on Government side of the House would wear religion on their sleeves.
“Just because someone may say Amen loudly or yell out something loudly does not mean that people are God,” he said.
He said all in the House believed in God and God believed that all human beings were equal. “We’re all God’s children.”
He said it should not be used to get a point across to score political points nor should it be used as a mean to threaten people at times.
