Reigning Under-11 boys 100m champion Sekope Puamau will wear the Vanua Balavu jumper in the 2015 FMF Chow Games which starts this Friday at the ANZ Stadium.
Puamau, 12, is one of the three boys who are partipating in the two-day event for Vanua Balavu. Puamau will now be running in his new U12 grade competing in the 100m and 200m events. The other two athletes include Misaele Bale who will be competing in the U14 shot-put and Joji Vuli in the U13 boys shot-put.
The trio attends Adi Maopa Primary School and will also be representing the Lau province to the Games since they are the lone participant from the Eastern group.
Team head coach Manoa Puamau said because of financial constraints in the island they tried their best to be represented at the games this year.
“We had a bigger squad but we had to work within our budget and cut costs so we decided to bring these three best athletes from the same school representing Vanua Balavu.
“We have brought these three athletes to try and give them good exposure in the Suva environment and experience the rubber tracks,” Puamau said.
“We want to acknowledge our families and friends back in the island for their support towards the preparation for the three athletes.
“We also want to acknowledge Mago Airlines for transporting us for free from the island to Nausori and back,” he added.
With a small squad, Puamau hopes the Lau community in Suva will support the trio and help boost the boys’ participation in the two-day event.
“I just want these boys to go out there and enjoy themselves,” he added.
A total of 1540 athletes will be participating in the two-day meet.
