The YMCA Karate Do’s will be looking to gain experience and exposure as they leave for New Zealand today for the 3rd Goju-Ryu Karate Championship in New Zealand.

Coach Steven Brown said this was a once in a lifetime opportunity for the 14-member team to compete on the world stage.

“This is the first time that we are going to such an event to represent Fiji, so we are blessed to be invited and to showcase our talent at such an event,” Brown said.

“We have been preparing so hard and we will be going there to do the best we can and see what we can achieve from there.”

There will be a total of 50 countries taking part in the competition and Brown said though their top competitor is South Africa, they are there to learn from the countries.

“South Africa is our biggest competition because they are the last world Goju-Ryu champions.

“It will be a big challenge for us but we are also going up against Australia and New Zealand,” he said.

“So we will see how we go, we are just so honoured to be part in such a prestigious event competing against Asian and European countries.

“Our aim is to learn as much as we can.

“We want to learn from these countries and gain more experience.

“The athletes are so excited to learn and cannot wait to travel, it will be a good trip and we thank the Lord for what He has done for us.”

Though the tournament is scheduled to start on November 25.

Brown said they are going a week early to allow their athletes to adapt.

“The main reason why we are going early is to train with our New Zealand counterparts until the tournament starts.

The 3rd Goju-Ryu Karate Championship is from November 25-29 at ASB Stadium in Auckland, New Zealand.

The team leaves Nadi International Airport at 1:55pm today.
