Do You Know Where Your Children Are?

6 children aged 8-14 years found wandering in Suva at 2am in the past week

As the school year comes to and end, the Fiji Police Force is again requesting parents and guardians to closely monitor their children’s whereabouts.

An ongoing joint operation is being conducted between officers from the Totogo Police Station and Department of Social Welfare officials because of the increase in the number of school children found in Suva City during odd hours of the morning and during the weekends.

Last week six children were returned to their homes by the team after they were seen on a bus in the early hours of Saturday morning.

When the children were questioned as to where they were going, most of them said they were just hanging out for no reason.

The children were aged from 14 years with youngest being eight-years-old.

Police chief operations officer ACP Rusiate Tudravu said: “When returned to their homes many of their parents were also looking for their children.

“This is a serious concern because children should be at home during these hours.”

The team also visited the bus companies concerned to be aware of incidents where children are travelling late in the night without the company of parents or guardians.

“Police are again pleading with parents and guardians to talk to their children to be mindful of what they get up to and the possible consequences of following the wrong crowd.

“This should be done more frequently as we don’t want children to be caught on the wrong side of the law or become victims of crime.”
