Police have stepped up patrols along the Dreketi-Nabouwalu Highway.

This is to arrest overspeeding, road accidents, and those allegedly stealing fuel from the China Railway First Group (Fiji) Limited. The company is upgrading the highway.

This was revealed by Nabouwalu Police Station officer, Eroni Soqosoqo during the Bua Provincial Council meeting at Nabouwalu yesterday.

“Take good care of the upgraded highway and be cautious during your travel because we have had one fatal accident since the upgrading started,” Mr Soqosoqo said.

“There are people stealing premix and fuel from the China Railway depot. Police have started patrolling the Dreketi-Nabouwalu corridor during construction works and at night to prevent thefts and accidents.”

He said the upgrade was scheduled be completed at the end of the year.

Company spokesperson Donald Singh said they would be able to meet the construction deadline.

“We are well positioned to finish the project by the end of this year. There were difficulties and delays faced because of the wet season, but road sealing works are progressing well. “

The upgrade also created employment to locals alongside more than 100 Chinese nationals (management and technicians) and more than 500 locals (management, technicians and labourers).

“This company is not only helping Government to complete their development projects, but also it is committed in providing employment to many locals,” Mr Singh said.

He said the company was well aware of its social responsibility in Fiji and they have been obliged with donations and sponsorship whenever requested.

“The company wishes to continue working on large infrastructure projects in Fiji, especially in the Northern Division so that we continue to provide employment to locals,” Mr Singh said.

The Dreketi – Nabouwalu Highway is expected to open next January.
