Parental engagement is a critical part of children’s education, the Minister for Education, Mahendra Reddy said.

He said that as part of their reforms next year, the Ministry would be including Pillar Four in the education reform- parental engagement.

“As you know we have three pillars as part of our 2015 agenda which are content review and development, delivery by our teachers and improvement of infrastructure,” he said.

“From next year Parental Engagement will be part of our agenda and this is because their engagement is an integral and critical component in a child’s education.”

He said Government had been assisting in building the future of every child in Fiji. We are assisting in building your child’s future to become a better citizen. We want your child to have the value and virtues that they should have to build a good and vibrant society,” Mr Reddy said.

“We are determined to take education to a different level. We want to raise academic excellence and raise the benchmark in respect to the kind of citizen we get out of our school system.”

He said education was not just about giving qualification to our children, but also developing them as an individual.

“It is about developing and preparing an individual to lead a community, a society, a region and a country. It is about ensuring that the child becomes good citizen of the country,” Mr Reddy said.

“It is about building capacity in the society, building a sustainable society where everyone accommodates others beliefs, others values, and accepts that others have a right to hold a belief.”

For that he said the ministry needed the partnership of parents, school management and the school community.

“All of you together we can do what needs to be done in terms of ensuring our children are well and ready to provide leadership in future,” Mr Reddy said.
