Latest On Goundar’s Ferry

The new ferry for Goundar Shipping Limited is expected to arrive in Suva next month.
The Shipping News had been reliably informed yesterday that a surveyor from the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF), had left with the company’s managing director George Goundar for Canada last week.
When contacted yesterday Goundar Shipping’s manager finance, operations and business Rakesh Prasad, said he was not in a position to comment about the new ferry.
“But surely our current ferries Lomaviti Princess 1 and 2 are ready to meet the demand during this festive season,” Mr Prasad said.
Questions emailed to MSAF remained answered when this edition went to press.
The company’s third vessel will make its voyage to Fiji under the Canadian flag.
NEW FERRY DETAILS
The MV Queen of Chilliwack (current name of the vessel) is a roll-on/roll off (RoRo) passenger vehicle ferry built in 1978 in Norway.
It has a length of 114 metres with a carrying capacity of 400 passengers and crew with 115 cars.
This new addition to the company’s current fleet is expected to boost domestic ferry services and fill the void in certain routes.
The previous owner was British Columbia Ferry Services and negotiations over the acquisition took about two years.
PROPOSED ROUTE
With major developments taking place in the Northern Division, there will be a demand for ferry services.
That is the direction the Goundar Shipping Limited is heading– to promote the North with much better and improved services.
The travelling public taking the Natovi to Nabouwalu route will be happy to note more competition to shipping services in the area.
The company has also purchased 15 buses to cater for the route.
