Naomi Talei’s quest for better education was rewarded yesterday when she was named the dux of Ballantine Memorial School.

The Nabuna, Koro Island lass joined the school this year from Suva Sangam School.

She changed school to become a boarder after staying with relatives in Suva for sometime. Her parents live on the island.

The Year 13 student said she was surprised to be announced as the recipient to the year’s best award.

“I did not expect to receive this Dux Award because I only joined this year,” she said.

“Despite the challenges I faced, I worked hard to get this award. I thank my parents for their support and encouragement.”

Naomi wants to become a nurse and will join Fiji National University (FNU) College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences next year.

Her sister Ateca Tubanavau said: “I am so happy with my sister’s achievement. Naomi always work hard to achieve her goals.

“We will have a party to celebrate her achievement,” she said.
