South Africa’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Maite Nkoana Mashabane has offered her sincere condolences to the family of Ashneel Singh, who was allegedly killed in a Suva road accident by a South African diplomat on October 2.
Ms Mashabane expressed the sentiments in a bilateral meeting with Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ratu Inoke Kubuabola in the margins of the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in Malta.
In their meeting, Ratu Inoke made a request for a waiver of diplomatic immunity to allow the legal proceedings against the diplomat concerned, Theodorus Mostert.
He confirmed that Ms Mashabane had acknowledged his request.
Mr Mostert left Fiji soon after the incident and there had been no inquiry because he was covered by the diplomatic immunity convention.
She promised to look into the matter when she returned to South Africa.
