Fiji National Rugby League Vodafone Cup Top 8 competition will not be contested from next year.

This was confirmed by FNRL chief executive officer Timoci Naleba.

“Top 8 competition had its own strength but is not enough to make Fiji Rugby League brand sustainable and viable,” Naleba said.

“Going forward FNRL has strategically made the decision to establish a High Performance Unit (HPU).

The unit will be responsible for the identification and strengthening of elite players.

“For an effective HPU, it is important that there is a strong and structured level of local competition to ensure fair, efficient and objective player talent identification and selection process.

“This leads to the need of establishing levels of competition that is more competitive than club level.”

Naleba believes setting up the HPU will assist club players to better their fitness and skills levels.
