Five people were sentenced yesterday to jail terms ranging from life to 13 years for murder, aggravated robbery and manslaughter by the High Court in Suva.

Rafaele Noa, Sireli Lilo, Iliesa Vakabua, Eparama Tamanivakabauta appeared before High Court judge, Justice Salesi Temo, in Suva yesterday.

The fifth-accused, Ilivasi Navunicagi, is still on the run after escaping from custody.

All five accused were each charged with one count of murder and aggravated robbery.

They had broken into John Leonard Dass’s home between August 21 and 22 in Lautoka in 2010 and forcefully stole properties worth close to $4000. The court yesterday heard that during the robbery, Mr Dass was strangled to death.

While delivering their sentences, Justice Temo convicted Noa, Navunicagi and Tamanivakabauta for the murder of Mr Dass.

He acquitted Lilo of murder but convicted him for a lesser offence of manslaughter. Vakabua, who was represented by Defence lawyer Isireli Romanu, was also acquitted of murder and manslaughter but was convicted of aggravated robbery.

Justice Temo sentenced Noa, Navunicagi and Tamanivakabauta to life imprisonment with a minimum of 20 years for both counts.

Lilo was sentenced to 14 years imprisonment with a non-parole period of 13 years, while Vakabua was sentenced to 13 years imprisonment with a non-parole period of 12 years.
