Telecom Fijiana head coach Chris Cracknell believes having the right attitude will push players to excel at the World Rugby Women Sevens Series in Dubai tomorrow.

The Fijians play the Canadians in their first game 9.20pm tomorrow.

“Teams now know we have changed,” he said.

“But we need to stay humble, focused and come with the right attitude every day.”

Cracknell was also impressed with the two Fijiana debutants Vaiti Waqatabu and St John’s College student Jiowana Sauto.

“Vaiti is no stranger to the environment now and brings great pedigree from her time playing netball,” he said.

“Jiowana has blended in really well after taking part in the Youth Commonwealth Games in Samoa in September.

“I’m excited to see both of them in the white Fijiana jersey this week.”

Canada newcomers

Canada also has two newcomers in Megan Lukan and Caroline Crossley.

Lukan is a crossover athlete who previously played four years of collegiate basketball at the University of Wisconsin, Green Bay, Minnesota. She has made two appearances for Canada’s Maple Leafs in the Amsterdam and recent Central Coast Sevens in Australia.

Crossley, 17, has been a rising star in Canada’s ranks for the last year and was part of the Maple Leafs squad at the Hong Kong 7s last season and also played in Amsterdam alongside Lukan. In September, she represented her country at the Youth Commonwealth Games in Samoa, where Canada won the silverware.

Challenge

“A great first-up challenge will give us a chance to measure ourselves against a top nation on the circuit and will be another step up in the challenges the girls have faced so far,” Cracknell said.

The Telecom Fijiana second game is against USA at 12.38am and the last pool game against Ireland at 3.35am.
