Learning From The Best: Smith

With just two days into the Fiji Invitational Series 2015, improvements in the Fiji men’s and women’s teams can already be seen with Round Three of competitions resuming today at the National Hockey Centre.
Fiji Hockey Federation executive member Millie Smith said while this tournament was to help develop the sport in the country; development can already be seen in the local teams.
“The tournament has been running smoothly, we have seen some pretty good competition and the weather has been good to us so far,” Smith said.
“The overseas teams are here to develop our sport further and help our Fiji players advance a bit more, show us more skills and just basically show us a better game of hockey.
“It’s just the second day of competition and we are already seeing some improvement, our basic aim is to just develop the sport further and lift our standard locally.
“Australian Country always send their teams down every year and we have seen that those teams are getting stronger which means that they are giving us more competition.
“There hasn’t been any upsets or surprise performances but every team is playing very well and we definitely seeing better hockey.”
The one-week tournament will also be a good build-up for the World Qualifiers Round One in July with a date and venue to be confirmed by International Hockey Federation.
Smith said the teams had a lot of to offer over the next few days and has urged the public to come and witness some great hockey being played.
“We have a second round of hockey where everyone gets to play each other twice and the games itself is very entertaining and we have seen the Fijian teams put up some good competition.”
