Suva businessman Ravin Nath won the Koffina Quarter Mile Drag Race clocking 10 seconds at the Taunovo Airstrip in Pacific Harbour yesterday.

A total of 32 drivers participated in the last event of the year for Fiji Car Club which president Raizal Haniff said has been the most successful year.

“Having 32 cars in the competition is an average for us but nonetheless, we can say that we have had a successful year,” Haniff said.

“We usually have around eight events but this last Quarter Mile is our ninth, so we surpassed our own number which shows the interest in the Drag Race is growing slowly every day.

“We have had six new cars which have joined and also six females who have competed in this year’s drag race which is a huge number for us and one which we want to grow and get more females involved.”

Looking to expand the sport of drag racing, Haniff said they have bigger goals next year which is to organise a drag race in the West.

“The major aim for us next year is trying to get a venue to host a drag race or drag wars event in West and trying to expand beyond the Suva,” he said.

“We have spoken to the Minister for Tourism Faiyaz Siddiq Koya about how this would potentially attract tourists as well.

“We have Issac Ali who is from the United States and that, for us, is a start. So we are looking to have yet another successful year in 2016.”
