A platoon of 24 Fijian soldiers and sailors left yesterday on board a French Hercules at Nausori Airport for sea training in New Caledonia.

The team leader, Second-Lieutenant Senikila Karisitiana said his team was looking forward to the two-week French sea training.

Participation

He said the team was made up of five divers from the Fiji Navy and the rest were from various units in the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF).

Sergeant Filipe Tidrai, who was also part of the team, said most of the team members were leaving our shores for military training for the first time.

He said they had been reminded of what to expect and should remain focused during their training.

Soldiers welcomed

Meanwhile, 24 French soldiers, who are in the country to undergo training in Tailevu, were welcomed at the Queen Elizabeth Barracks by the Land Force Commander, Lieutenant-Colonel Sapenafa Motufaga.

The Chargee D’affaires of the Embassy of France to Fiji, Jules Irrmann said the training was part of an agreement between France and Fiji signed earlier in May.

Mr Irrmann said as part of the agreement, a French Naval ship would also arrive on Thursday at Lautoka.
