A fire in Lautoka yesterday has left two businesses in ruins.
What may have taken years to establish, the fire yesterday destroyed it in at least “10 minutes”.
The morning blaze destroyed the Lautoka Upholstery Works outlet and its neighbouring business, Total Stainless Fiji Limited.
A witness, who wished to remain anonymous, confirmed that the fire started at around 10am.
“The fire started at the back of the building and in just 10minutes the whole building was gone,” the witness said.
“When the fire started all the staff members ran out of the building. No one was hurt but the fire had spread to the next building.”
National Fire Authority (NFA) firefighters managed to contain the fire which had partly burnt neighbouring buildings.
NFA chief executive officer John O’ Connor said the fire could have been deadly if firefighters had not arrived on time to control it.
“This fire could have been a major fire disaster and I thank our fire teams in aggressively fighting the fire and preventing it from spreading,” he said.
He has requested businesses and home owners to take fire safety measures seriously, especially during the dry spell.
“It is very important for home and business owners to be mindful of fire safety during this dry weather conditions and take extra care to prevent a fire from starting,” he said.
“We are also approaching the festive season and there will be a lot of activities in the workplace and at home, so it is very important that we take fire safety seriously.”
Galib Shah, the Director of Lautoka Upholstery Works, refused to comment on the matter when contacted last night.
