Community health worker champ Macuata Matelita Kadin says training on the basic knowledge of promoting safe motherhood is very important.

“It is an important training as they help inform mothers about the importance of booking during the first three months of pregnancy and how to plan for the birth of baby,” Mrs Kadin said.

She said they would also be learning about promoting child health and wellness in the community.

“We give them the best training so they know what to do in their communities which are beneficial both to communities and the health ministry as well.”

Community health workers learned the importance of promoting safe motherhood in health administrative services.

Meanwhile, Sanjeshni Lata of Wavuwavu Settlement outside Labasa said she enjoyed being the only Indo- Fijian community health worker at the training.

“I am very happy to attend the workshop where I get to learn new things and socialise with other community health workers also,” Mrs Lata said.

“I look after Vunivutu, Naivitia and Matiyabai rural settlements which is part of Wavuwavu and I get to assist different kinds of people from different backgrounds and the one thing I have learned is it’s important to have a good relationship within your family, workplace and community.”

Around 29 community health workers from Dreketi, Labasa and Wainikoro districts were attending a three-day Community Health Workers Training at the Nutrition Centre in Labasa.

The AusAid-funded training in collaboration with the Ministry of Health ends today.
