Ministry Encourages Youth Entrepreneurship

The Ministry of Youth and Sports acknowledges the great partnership that exists between the ministry and Investment Fiji in ensuring that youths are recognised and encouraged to pursue entrepreneurial success.

Since 2013, the Ministry has supported the initiative and partner with Investment Fiji to reward a successful youth entrepreneur at the prestigious national and annual Westpac Prime Minister’s Exporter of the Year Awards.

The Ministry in 2015 increased its annual sponsorship towards the Youth Entrepreneur Award to attract more entries from interested youth entrepreneurs.

The Ministry wishes to congratulate all winners of the 2015 Westpac Prime Minister’s Exporter of the Year Award.

The awards are in recognition of their investment, commitment, dedication and civic pride – towards the economic development and growth of Fiji.

Government through Investment Fiji’s organised Prime Minister’s Exporter of the Year Award wishes to acknowledge and entice Fijians to pursue business excellence that contributes towards the national economy.

The Youth Ministry through its sponsorship wishes to encourage young Fijians to pursue entrepreneurial activities that suit them, and grow them with confidence.

The Ministry believes working in partnership with other stakeholders like Investment Fiji can help entice younger Fijians to pursue entrepreneurship as a means of livelihood.

In the past three years, the Youth Entrepreneur Award is in recognition of Fijians aged 15 to 35 in successful business enterprises.

The Ministry of Youth and Sport’s Non-Formal Education Policy and its Know-About Business training program as entrepreneurship has its core objective.

The Ministry believes entrepreneurship education offers a solution to youth unemployment.

It will prepare youth to be responsible, enterprising individuals who can become entrepreneurs or entrepreneurial thinkers by immersing them in real life learning experiences where they can take risks, manage the results, and learn from the outcomes.

Through entrepreneurship education, young people, including those with disabilities, learn organisational skills, including time management, leadership development and interpersonal skills, all of which are highly transferable skills sought by employers.

The Youth Ministry will continue to provide the necessary support and environment that will support young entrepreneurs to build the right skill set.

It will strive to support financial management skills, business and marketing skills.

We also provide support in gaining the softer skills that help build confidence and support the vocational skills young entrepreneurs are encouraged to have.

The Ministry believes entrepreneurship is a sustainable strategy to alleviate unemployment and can lead to economic self-sufficiency for people from all walks of life.
