The Ministry of Youth and Sports on Thursday handed over the newly-developed playing field to the management of Thomas Baker Memorial School in Navosa.

Minister for Youth and Sports  Laisenia Tuitubou, while officiating at the hand-over ceremony of the playing field urged school management and villagers of the district of Navatusila, Navosa to make full use of Government’s assistance.

“This year in total our sports section had set out to develop five rural sporting fields and this one that is being handed over to the school is the last one for the year for the ministry to officially hand-over,” Tuitubou said.

“On behalf of Government, I want to iterate to you to ensure that you nurture your sporting talents here in Navosa through this newly-developed playing field because Government’s contribution towards sports development is being realised at international level as can be witnessed by our successful national sporting teams.”

Tuitubou added that with the newly developed field being made to suit international standard-sized grounds, it should boost the emergence of sporting talent from their district.

“With all our developed rural sporting fields being constructed to international size standards, there should be no reason why you cannot go further to represent our national teams and perform at similar levels internationally as well as here on your ground because this is the standard size for a rugby field,” Tuitubou said.

He also elaborated on the reasons for the development of the sporting field at Navatusila as it was aimed towards the raising of rural sporting prowess.

He also informed them of Government’s further commitment towards rural sport development through the increased budgetary allocation for 2016.

“As you may all be aware, Government has allocated $400,000 in next year’s budget, which is set to cater solely for the development of 10 more sporting fields for rural communities,” he said.

School manager Mosese Naura in receiving the Certificate of Completion for the playing field said that the district of Navatusila had been in dire need for a better ground.

“For a very long time, students of Thomas Baker Memorial School and youths of the four villages of Navatusila had requested for Government’s assistance to construct a suitable ground here,” said Naura.

“We will surely look after this playing field as it is an investment given to us by Government and we will truly take full advantage of this enormous assistance from the ministry.”

The ministry has handed over newly-developed and upgraded rural sporting fields in the communities of Lokia in Rewa, Waikete Village and Gram Sangathan Primary School in Tailevu, as well as Nadrau Primary School in Navosa and Namamanuca Primary School on Malolo Island respectively.
