Fijian movement plays active role at IFRC global conference

Red Cross Red Crescent (RCRC) leaders and States met on Tuesday to discuss common priorities for tackling the most pressing humanitarian issues.

In a global forum attended by 2600 delegates, Fiji Red Cross Society stood out as a winner of the Youth on the Move Award, Board Member of the International Federation of Red Cross (IFRC). The society was also the leader of a side event on disaster preparedness and risk reduction, and chair of the Commission on gender based violence and member of the drafting committee.

The 32nd International Conference of the RCRC was opened on Thursday by the leaders of the movement followed by Swiss President Simonetta Sommaruga´s message on the power of humanity and neutrality.

The conference kicked off with the acknowledgment of the volunteers who put themselves bravely in the frontline of the fight against Ebola in West Africa earlier last year. Attended by representatives from 190 countries, the ceremony was crowned with a song dedicated to volunteers saving lives around the world.

This year´s conference marked an important milestone for Fiji Red Cross Society.

Its significant efforts in adapting to climate change and addressing catastrophes, the youth division of Fiji Red Cross Society was awarded with the Youth on the Move Award.

As the future leaders of our society, youth play a crucial role in building strategies towards the sustainable future of Fiji, and Fiji Red Cross Society is proud to be supported by the growing number of young supporters.
