Rewa Eyes Strawberry Farming

Ro Teimumu calls for more land
A fruit, strawberry, that can only be farmed overseas now has the potential to grow in the province of Rewa.
This was revealed by the paramount chief of Rewa, Ro Teimumu Kepa, while addressing the Rewa Provincial Council meeting at Nadoi Village on Thursday.
She said land was also needed for the farming of rice and ginger.
“Apart from that there is also potential for strawberry and other fruits that grow overseas and can now grow on the Rewa Delta. That is what was suggested by Grace Road when they came to inspect our soil,” Ro Teimumu said.
“Our soil and climate conditions have the possibility for strawberry farming and other fruits that can only grow overseas. We are blessed to have vast land resources and the land brings about economic development for the province.
“To all landowners, you can see the current development in Burebasaga, suggested to the Roko Tu Matai. Eighty acres of land from Burebasaga was given but only 20 acres have been used for rice and ginger farming. We need more land for ginger and rice farming. The land in Rewa is what Grace Road Food Company Limited is looking for,” she said.
Rewa provincial administrator Josevata Suka agreed with Ro Teimumu on the potential of strawberry farming in Rewa.
“This is a fact proved scientifically by Grace Road Food Company Limited. Before we didn’t know that ginger farming can also take place on the Rewa Delta until we started farming them and this ginger farming became a success with the assistance of Grace Road.
“Strawberry, as we all know, cannot be grown in Fiji and if this comes as a reality then Rewa will probably be the first out of the 14 provinces producing an exciting commodity that will help our economy,” he said.
