The paramount chief of Rewa, Ro Teimumu Kepa has called on the people of her province to be vigilant in safeguarding their children.

“The increase in sexual abuse on women around the nation is a concern,” Ro Teimumu told delegates of the Rewa Provincial Council meeting at Nadoi Village on Thursday.

“Now not only young girls are sexually abused, but also young boys, so it is important that our children are monitored.”

She urged parents to monitor their children during the school break and prevent them from being involved in criminal activities, from being drowned and getting involved in road accidents.

Her advice followed revelation of increase in criminal activities in the province – among them is the rise in illegal drug or marijuana use.

Nausori Police Station officer in charge (OC), Inspector Daniele Lawakeli informed the meeting that criminal activities in the province had increased.

He told delegates on Thursday that on Wednesday, the first day of the meeting, a man whose house is situated near the village hall – the meeting venue, was alleged to have been smoking marijuana with about 20 young men in his home.

“The incident happened around midday on the first day of the provincial meeting where village heads from around the province and districts representatives were undergoing an educational awareness programme.

“This is a concern to the village because these kinds of people pose threats to villagers and can bring about fear,” Inspector Lawakeli said.

Meanwhile, Rewa Provincial Council vice-president Pita Tagicakiverata said this kind of news damaged the reputation of their village and the province.
