Reforms in the taxation system are designed to encourage compliance, says Visvanath Das, acting chief executive of the Fiji Revenue and Customs Authority (FRCA).
He was speaking at the 17th Attorney-General’s Conference at InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort and Spa, Natadola, yesterday.
He said there was still a culture of dishonesty and lack of integrity.
He said people were allowed to make as much money as they could, but they should pay their tax. He said Fiji had provided the environment, the drop in income tax from 31 per cent to 20 and VAT (Value Added Tax) from 15 per cent to 9 per cent.
He said people should fulfil their obligations to register, file and report. He said there needed to be a change in mindset.“We’re not softening our stand on tax evasion,” he said.
