Boxing Letdown in Nadi

What was supposed to be a ‘Rumble of the Year’ turned out to be an absolute chaos at Prince Charles Park in Nadi last Saturday night.
Boxing Communication of Fiji heavyweight champion Petero Qica failed to show up. Instead his manager William Ubitau produced medical certificates to prove Qica as unfit to defend his title.
Ubitau was jeered by angry fans whe he apologised to the crowd.
“I have medical reports about Qica and I apologise for him not being able to fight tonight,” Ubitau said.
Title challenger Napoleon Taumoepeau was equally frustrated.
“I was in the hospital on Thursday but I’m here as promised,” he said.
The main supporting bout between Wahid Khan and Siliveni Nawai also ended up in nasty way.
This was after Nawai punched Khan as he was sitting down on his corner after his cornerman threw in the towel in the fifth round.
The incident nearly created a free-for-all brawl but policemen on duty intervened.
BCF director Usman Ali said it was too early for them to comment about the incident.
